The Gujarat Titans became the 1st team to secure a spot in the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) playoffs, defeating the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by 34 runs.
Shubman Gill, who struck his maiden IPL century and third tonne overall in T20 cricket, was instrumental in GT’s great victory.
Shubman Gill hit 101 in 58 deliveries on Monday, his innings highlighted by 13 fours and a six. The innings are another milestone in Gill’s breakout year in international cricket and the IPL.
Gill scored 576 runs in the IPL this season at a strike rate of 146.19 and an average of 48.00, with four half-centuries to go with the century.
Gill’s India teammate and former captain Virat Kohli stated after Monday’s innings that he expects the 23-year-old to lead the next generation of Indian players.
“There’s gill, and then there’s potential.” Continue to lead the next generation. “God bless you,” Kohli wrote on Instagram.
Gill’s century moved him into second place, one run ahead of Rajasthan Royal’s teenager Yashasvi Jaiswal, who is also having a breakout season.
Jaiswal has 575 runs in 13 matches, with a strike rate of 166.18 and also an average of 47.92. He also had a century and four half-centuries to his name.
One of these half-centuries was an unbeaten 98 off 47 balls in which he set a new IPL record for the fastest fifty, reaching it in only 13 balls.
Jaiswal has only recently begun discussions about perhaps playing for India, but Gill has established himself as India’s first-choice opener in all forms with Rohit Sharma.
Jaiswal had an outstanding domestic season across all forms, and Gill had an outstanding international season. Gill hit 154 runs in three Test innings this year, including a maiden Test century at home. Gill has 624 runs at an average of 78.00 in nine ODIs this year, with three hundred.
Gill turned the 2nd of those centuries into a double century towards New Zealand in Hyderabad. Gill made his T20I debut this year and has 202 runs in six matches at a strike rate of 165.57 and also an average of 40.40.
On February 1, he scored an undefeated 126 off 63 balls against New Zealand, breaking Kohli’s record for the greatest T20 international score by an Indian.
