During the ongoing Test match between England vs Australia, a weird twist took place, the controversial runout of Jonny Bairstow.

The second half of the morning session on Day 5 saw absolute carnage from Ben Stokes, who raced away to his Test century to single-handedly keep England’s hopes alive and might pull off a Headingley-like classic on Sunday afternoon at Lord’s.

Still, the most talked-about and replayed portion of the entertaining second Ashes Test will be that controversial run out of Jonny Bairstow.

Even though it was due to a brilliant piece of glovework from Australia wicketkeeper Alex Carey, Bairstow’s incomprehensible act was the essence of the dismissal.

It happened in the 52nd over, just before lunch on the last day of the Test match, in which England hopes to tie the series at 1-1 following Australia’s triumph in Birmingham.

Cameron Green tossed a short wide ball off, and Bairstow ducked it and immediately began going towards his partner Stokes.

Normally, a player checks with the wicketkeeper or the player/s in the slips before walking out of the crease, but Bairstow did not do so and moved out of the crease leisurely.

Carey, aware of what was happening, under-armed the ball towards the stumps and dislodged the bails.

There was an immediate appeal, and Bairstow was shellshocked and confounded at the sight and possibly at the prospect of it.

A few Australian players surrounded Stokes and Jonny Bairstow, exchanging words.

TV umpire Marais Erasmus quickly reviewed the replays and ruled it out. A ball is considered dead when it is “finally settled,” which “is a matter solely for the umpire to decide,” according to Law 20.

Umpire Ahsan Raza had not even signalled a halt to the game. Later, on Sky Sports commentary, former England captain Mike Atherton read a message from former award-winning umpire Simon Taufel, who noted that the ball is not ruled dead until “both sides disregard that the ball is in play.”

Here’s the video of the controversial runout of Jonny Bairstow:

The Lord’s audience was furious with the decision, chanting, “Shame old Aussies, always cheating,” and roarong loauding to each boundary Stokes struck after the incident.

Meanwhile, new batter Stuart Broad was spotted tapping his bat at both ends, glancing at the umpire each time, and many words were exchanged.
