Yuvraj Singh Explains Why He Didn’t Get India Captaincy

Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has revealed why he was denied the national team’s captaincy.

Yuvraj Singh was a key member of India’s golden era of cricket. He was a standout performer when India won the World T20 in 2007 and the ICC World Cup in 2022. He could never be India’s full-time captain, however. The great all-rounder has now revealed why MS Dhoni was chosen over him for the 2007 World T20 despite being the ODI vice-captain on the previous tour of England. Singh stated this because he supported Sachin Tendulkar during a turbulent period in Indian cricket.

Chappell, a former Australian cricketer, was India’s coach from 2005 to 2007.

He got into fights with both Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar during that time. “Several senior players disagreed with how Chappell was handling our side,” he said in his biopic “Sachin: A Billion Dreams.” As a result, Yuvaraj made drastic changes to the batting order just before the World Cup that affected everyone on the team.”

Chappell’s decisions caused dissatisfaction in the camp, and Singh stated that his stance in the incident prevented him from becoming a full-time captain of the Indian cricket team.

“I was meant to be the captain. Then there was the Greg Chappell incident.

It was now Chappell or Sachin. I was most likely the only player who supported…my teammate. And there were quite a few people in the… Some BCCI officials were not pleased. It was suggested that they make anyone captain except myself. This is what I was told. I’m not sure how accurate it is. I was abruptly removed from the vice-captaincy. Sehwag was not on the team. So, seemingly out of nowhere, Mahi was named captain of the 2007 T20 World Cup. I assumed I would be the captain, “During an interview on Sports18, Singh told Sanjay Manjrekar.
