Zelensky vows action if Russia ignores Trump’s ‘Energy Ceasefire’.

Kyiv unsettled by unilateral truce announcement lacking clarity.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has warned that Ukraine will retaliate if Moscow fails to comply with the “energy ceasefire” unexpectedly announced by US President Donald Trump. Speaking via video link at the Warsaw Security Forum on Monday, Zelensky said, “If Russia does not agree to an energy ceasefire, we will respond.”

Trump’s announcement, made on his Truth Social platform over the weekend, sparked confusion in Kyiv and drew silence from Moscow. Western allies expressed solidarity with Ukraine while questioning Washington’s lack of concrete details. Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine is awaiting clarification: “We are waiting for the details of the conversation between the Americans and the Russians, and we are waiting to see what specific steps the Americans are ready to take.”

The declaration followed Trump’s decision to temporarily ease US sanctions on Russian diesel, a move that provoked anger among European partners and Ukrainian officials. Critics argued that such concessions risk strengthening Russian President Vladimir Putin, even as Ukraine continues to suffer strikes on its energy grid and civilian infrastructure.

Zelensky made clear that any halt to Ukraine’s long‑range strikes on Russian oil facilities would depend on Moscow ceasing its bombardment of Ukraine’s power systems. “If Russia wants us to stop our long‑range strikes against its oil refineries and oil exports, then Russia must stop its strikes against our energy system and critical infrastructure and stop killing our people,” he said.

Trump has previously announced ceasefires or truces without prior confirmation from either Kyiv or Moscow, often leaving diplomats scrambling to interpret his statements. His latest declaration has added to uncertainty over US policy in the conflict. Zelensky stressed that genuine measures to reduce escalation must be grounded in reality, not social media posts. “An energy ceasefire and other steps to reduce escalation and guarantee security are truly needed here in reality, not just on Truth Social,” he remarked.

The episode highlights the fragile balance between diplomacy and deterrence in the ongoing war. For Ukraine, safeguarding its energy infrastructure remains a top priority. For Washington, Trump’s unpredictable announcements continue to raise questions about the coherence of US strategy. It remains unclear whether this “energy ceasefire” will evolve into a tangible agreement or fade into another unconfirmed declaration.
