Farrukh Jaffer has made nearly a dozen films in the last 20 years, including director Shoojit Sircar Gulabo Sitabo.
Actor Farrukh Jaffer, who last played Amitabh Bachchan’s wife, Fatima Begum, in Gulabo Sitabo, died Friday in Lucknow. She is 88 years old.
Jaffer’s grandson Shaaz Ahmad shared the news on Twitter. He wrote on Twitter: “My grandmother and wife of freedom fighter, former MLC Mr. S.M. Jaffar and veteran actress Mrs. Farrukh Jaffar passed away happily at 19.00 today.
Screenwriter Juhi Chaturvedi took to Instagram to mourn the veteran actor’s death. He shared a photo and wrote, “begum gain. Farrukh ji… na aap jaisa koi tha aur na hoga.. dil se shukriya jo aapne humko aapse rishta jodne ki ijaazat di… ab allah ki uss duniya my hifaazat se rahiyega… RIP #Farrukh Jaffer #Beg nobody like you. Please be careful in God’s other world. RIP #FarrukhJaffar #Begum #FattoBi #FatimaBegum #GulaboSitabo)”
Farrukh Jaffer was born in Jaunpur in 1933 as a child of the Zamindar family.
She moved to Lucknow at the age of 16 after marrying journalist and freedom fighter Syed Mohamed Jaffer, who encouraged her to study and be part of theater and film.
Farrukh Jaffer graduated from Lucknow University and soon got a job at All India Radio. She became one of the first female voice actors on AIR, Lucknow. However, in 1966, he quit his job to help his widowed mother defend her farm in Haunpur. After her husband’s release, she eventually moved to Delhi and joined AIR’s Urdu ministry while attending an acting workshop from Ebrahim Alcazar.
Farrukh Jaffer made his film debut with Muzaffar Ali Umrao Jaan (1981), Rekha’s mother. His second film Swades (2004) followed 23 years later, followed by Peepli Live, Chakravyuh, Sultan, and Tanu Weds Manu. He also starred in Narayan Chauhan’s Narayan Ki Boli (2019).
Jaffer has made nearly a dozen films in the last 20 years, including Gulabo Stobo. At age 88, she won the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award for director Shoojit Sircar, making her the oldest winner in the acting category. His subsequent films Mehrunisa, Raks, Kundan Nandy, and several short films are still pending. Two daughters survive Farrukh Jaffer.
