Canada Government reveals immigration increased their population

The government has revealed that the population of Canada increased by over a million people for the first time ever last year.

Statistics Canada said the nation’s population rose from 38,516,138 to 39,566,248 people. It also scored Canada’s highest yearly population growth rate – 2.7% – since 1957.

The growth was somewhat fuelled by government measures to recruit migrants to the government to reduce labour shortages, Statistics Canada said.

The government also relies on migration to help an ageing population.

But Statistics Canada said the rise in permanent and temporary emigrants could “also mean more challenges for some parts of the country bonded to accommodation, infrastructure and transportation, and service delivery to the people.”

According to the press release, global migration accounted for about 96% of the population increase.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has tried luring more immigrants to the nation since achieving power in 2015. Last year, the government planned to greet half a million settlers a year by 2025.

The Canadian government has even accepted people impacted by conflicts like the Ukraine war, Afghanistan’s humanitarian situation, and the 2023 tremors in Turkey and Syria.

On Wednesday, it reported an extension – till July – of a programme offering temporarily relocates Ukrainians and their family members.
