Gold and iPhones Seized at Mumbai Airport

Mumbai Customs Zone-3, in a series of successful operations, seized over 8 kg of gold worth approximately ₹4 crores and confiscated five iPhones in eight separate cases on Wednesday.

Concealment Techniques

The seized gold was cleverly concealed in various items, including the frame of a check-in bag, a box of crockery, clothes worn by the passengers, and a handbag. This indicates the sophistication of the smuggling operations and highlights the challenges faced by authorities in combating illegal activities at airports.

Previous Operations

This recent success follows a string of operations conducted by the Mumbai Customs Zone-III. From February 18 to 24, over 7.64 kg of gold valued at ₹4.09 crores was seized in seven different cases. In these instances, gold was smuggled using various methods, such as utilizing the retail staff of a mobile company, concealing it in a hot plate, a bicycle, an aircraft seat, and even within the corner piping of a bag and a check-in bag.

Efforts to Combat Smuggling

These seizures underscore the continuous efforts of Mumbai Customs to combat smuggling activities at the airport. Through rigorous inspection procedures and collaboration with various stakeholders, authorities remain vigilant in detecting and preventing illegal trafficking of goods.

As smuggling techniques evolve, so do the strategies employed by law enforcement agencies to thwart such activities. The recent successes demonstrate the effectiveness of proactive measures in safeguarding national interests and upholding the rule of law.
