IMD has issued red alert in Maharashtra, as several districts might experience heavy pour downs.
The India Meteorological Department issued a rainfall warning Thursday, detailing the weather scenario for the next five days amidst persistent heavy rain in Maharashtra.
The weather service has issued an ‘orange’ signal for Mumbai, indicating that heavy rain is expected in the city and suburbs on Friday.
Red Alert in Maharashtra Districts:
A ‘red alert’ has been issued for four districts: Thane, Raigad, Pune, and Palghar, as these areas may see heavy rain until Saturday.
The weather warning prompted authorities to proclaim a school vacation in Palghar and Thane and to deploy National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel in six districts to alleviate the impact of rain-related disasters.
In light of the circumstances, the state government issued a warning on Thursday, advising residents not to leave their homes prematurely. “…With the possibility of heavy rain, the state government urges citizens not to go out unless they have a very important work,” the CMO’s office tweeted.
The horrific Raigad landslide:
Six NDRF teams have been sent to Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Kolhapur, and Sangli to deal with the excessive rains. IMD has issued an ‘orange’ alert in landslide-hit Raigad, where at least 16 people died on Thursday.
The NDRF will resume rescue operations in a landslip at Raigad’s Irshalwadi hamlet, where over 100 people are still reportedly dug beneath rubble and loose soil. Meanwhile, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams were stationed in Gadchiroli and Nanded.
School to remain closed:
The weather will likely improve in Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar during the following three to four days. Mumbai’s civic authority, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporations, reported an average of 27.50 mm rainfall in the previous 24 hours as of 8 a.m. Friday.
In addition to Thane and Palghar, 355 schools in Pune’s hilly regions, including Ambegaon, Khed, Junnar, Bhor, Purandar, Mulshi, and Maval, will be closed on Friday due to inclement weather.
The Vashishti and Jagbudi rivers in Ratnagiri, as well as the Kundalika, Amba, Savitri, and Patalganga rivers in Raigad, are all flowing above the danger line, according to officials.
The Panchganga River in Kolhapur is also approaching flood stage. Because of the high tide, officials have warned villages near coastal areas.
No districts have been placed on red alert for Saturday; nevertheless, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Pune, and Satara remain on ‘orange’ alert.
