As per the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), hate crimes increased in the US by roughly 12% in 2021, with 64.5% of victims being victims of bias based on race or ancestry.

The FBI added that 43.2% of all offences were related to intimidation in an update to its annual report that was released on Monday.

The FBI revealed that nationwide reports of hate crimes rose by 11.6% from 8,120 in 2020 to 9,065 in 2021, adding that the new dataset for 2021 now includes all reports of crimes from law enforcement agencies.

The revised hate crime dataset reports have reported 10,840 events and 12,411 related offences.

12,411 victims were involved in over 10,500 single-bias instances, according to the report.

According to a percentage breakdown of victims by bias type, 14.1% of victims were targeted due to the offenders’ religious bias, 15.9% of victims were targeted due to the offenders’ sexual orientation, and 64.5% of victims were targeted due to the offenders’ race/ethnicity/ancestry bias.

There were 411 victims in 310 occurrences of multiple-bias crimes.

Intimidation made up 43.2% of the 8,327 hate crime offences classed as crimes against people in the revised 2021 dataset, simple assault made up 35.5%, and aggravated assault made up 20.1%.

As hate crimes, there were 19 rapes and 18 killings.

The remaining 70 hate incidents categorised as crimes against people were reported under the heading of others.

According to the report, acts of vandalism, damage, or destruction accounted for 71.2% of the 3,817 hate crimes classified as crimes against property.

267 new offences in all were labelled as crimes against society.

This crime category reflects societal restrictions on certain behaviours, including prostitution, gambling, and drug offences. According to the FBI‘s report, these are often crimes without victims in which the target is not a piece of property.
