Indian groom and his brother died after a wedding gift explodes

A newly-married Indian groom and his brother have died after a home theatre speaker they received as a wedding present blasted.

The officer said the home theatre system was planted with explosives that exploded as soon as it was plugged into power.

While the Indian groom passed away on the spot, his brother succumbed to wounds during treatment. Police told the bomb was allegedly given by the bride’s ex-lover, who was furious at her for marrying another man.

The charged, identified as Sarju Markam from the neighbouring region of Madhya Pradesh, was detained on Tuesday. Since he’s in police custody, he’s not made any comments yet.

Four more, including an 18-month-boy, were wounded in the blast on 3 April at the groom’s residence in Kabirdham district in the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh.

Police told Mr Markam, 33, was dating the 29-year-old woman and urged that she become his second partner.

But the woman’s family denied her and arranged her wedding elsewhere. Police said the explosion was so intense that the room’s walls and roof tumbled from its impact.

The police said that when the husband, 22-year-old Hemendra Merawi, turned on the home theatre system after connecting its plug to an electric band, a massive blast led to Mr Merawi’s demise.
