Shankaracharya Swami Swarupananda Saraswati of Jyortimatha Badrinath and Shardapith Dwarka passed away at 99. He breathed his last at Paramahansa Ganga Ashram in Narsinghpur around 3.30 pm on Sunday.

Shankaracharya Swami Swarupanandaji made a controversial statement on Saibaba in the Parliament of Religions held on June 23, 2014. He termed the worship of Sai as anti-Hindu and said that his devotees have no right to worship Lord Rama, bathe in the Ganga and chant Har-Har Mahadev. The boycott of Sai Puja was unanimously announced in the Parliament of Religions. After which he said in 2016 that Sai worship is the cause of drought in Maharashtra. Accusing the Center of fooling people in the name of the Ram temple,
Swami Swarupananda had defended Trinamool Congress president Mamata Banerjee’s angry reaction to the ‘Jai Shri Ram’ slogan in West Bengal in 2019, saying that she was not against Ram but the BJP. He accused the central government of fooling the public in the name of the Ram temple in Ayodhya. He was told – now we have decided to build a temple in another place. Swami Swarupananda was embroiled in controversy over this statement.
Pilgrims were blamed for the Kedarnath tragedy.
On the tragedy in Kedarnath in 2013, Shankaracharya Swami Swarupananda Saraswatiji said – People have turned the shrines into picnic and honeymoon spots, which such a tragedy was seen.
In April 2016, at a press conference held on the occasion of Vaishakhi and Ardhakumbh Mela bathing, Swami Swarupananda Saraswati created a controversy by making a statement about pilgrims. He spoke about the calamities in Kedarnath and Uttarakhand. He said dams built in the Ganga, damming the Alaknanda river, and submerging the Dhari Devi temple and pilgrims coming to the holy place and staying in hotels are the leading causes of violence.
