Deepika Padukone Announces ‘Piku’ Re-Release to Celebrate 10 Years, Pays Tribute to Irrfan
Bollywood’s beloved dramedy Piku is all set to return to the big screen, a decade after it first won hearts with its unique blend of humour, emotion, and realism. To mark its 10th anniversary, the film will be re-released in theatres on May 9, 2025, as announced by actor Deepika Padukone on social media on April 19.
Sharing her love for the film and fondly remembering her late co-star Irrfan, Deepika wrote, “A film that will always have my heart – PIKU is back in theatres on 9th May 2025 to celebrate its 10th Anniversary! Irrfan, we miss you! And think about you every so often.”
The announcement was also made in a heartwarming moment on Kaun Banega Crorepati, where veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan, who played Deepika’s on-screen father in the film, urged audiences to revisit the magic of Piku in theatres this May.
Directed by Shoojit Sircar, Piku was originally released on May 8, 2015, and quickly became a cult favourite. The film starred Deepika Padukone as the independent and fiery Piku Banerjee, an architect in Delhi juggling her demanding job and her eccentric, hypochondriac father, played by Amitabh Bachchan. Irrfan Khan rounded out the trio as the quiet, observant cab company owner Rana, who ends up joining the father-daughter duo on a road trip from Delhi to Kolkata.
While the film’s plot revolves around something as mundane as a road journey and an elderly man’s digestive issues, Piku delicately explores themes of familial love, aging parents, gender roles, and emotional baggage—with wit and warmth. It captured audiences with its subtle storytelling, grounded performances, and the charming chemistry between its lead actors.
Irrfan’s role as the calm, grounded Rana was particularly celebrated for its understated brilliance, adding balance to the otherwise chaotic dynamic between Piku and her father. His performance remains one of the film’s most memorable elements and a reminder of the talent the Indian film industry lost too soon.
As the film gears up for its theatrical re-release, fans are already sharing their excitement online, recalling their favourite scenes and dialogues. The announcement has not only rekindled memories of the film but also brought an emotional wave of remembrance for Irrfan, who passed away in April 2020.
Whether it’s for a fresh watch or a nostalgic revisit, Piku promises to once again take audiences on a journey filled with laughter, tears, and reflections on family life. As Deepika said—it’s a film that will always have our hearts.
