The first day of the Monsoon session was held in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, divided by plastic shields placed in front of their benches, members of Lok Sabha attended.

Although nearly 200 members were present in the Chamber of Lok Sabha, a little over 30 were sitting in the gallery of visitors situated above the main Chamber.

A giant TV screen in the Chamber of Lok Sabha showed very few members of Lok Sabha occupying seats in the Chamber of Rajya Sabha, the other place where LS MPs were compensated keeping physical distancing norms in mind.

Benches that typically hold six members only had a numbered seating arrangement for three.

Things for the safety from corona:

In front of benches, glass-like plastic shields of different sizes were mounted to protect the members from coronavirus. 

The shield also shielded a portion of the sides of the members. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, sitting on a number one seat, occupied the front seats of the treasury benches to the right of the Speaker’s podium, Minister of Defence Rajnath Singh on number 2 seat and Minister of Agriculture Narendra Singh Tomar on number 3 seat.

From Opposition party leaders:

T R Baalu of the DMK and Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury of Congress occupied the front seats of the Opposition benches. Farooq Abdullah, the leader of the National Conference, was also present and sat in the second row of opposition benches.

When PM Modi entered Lok Sabha:

He was greeted with claps and the slogan “Bharat Mata Ki Jai,” as soon as the prime minister entered the Chamber. Modi invited representatives with folded hands, including those from the Opposition.

Both participants wore masks. Some were seen wearing face-shields too, like Kalyan Banerjee, leader of the Trinamool Congress.

The House met in the morning for 20 minutes and was adjourned for an hour after paying tribute to former President Pranab Mukherjee, a sitting MP, and the 13 former members who had died in the recent past.
