The chairman and managing director of Reliance Industries Ltd Mukesh Ambani surpasses Microsoft’s Satya Nadella and Google’s Sundar Pichai to be rated No.2 globally, just behind Tencent’s Huateng Ma.

Billionaire Mukesh Ambani, the Chairman and Managing Director of Reliance Industries Ltd, has achieved a remarkable feat by securing the top spot among all Indian CEOs and ranking second globally in the Brand Guardianship Index 2024 compiled by Brand Finance. 

This prestigious index recognizes leaders who are building sustainable business value by addressing the needs of various stakeholders.

Global Recognition and Overtaking Tech Titans:

Ambani’s ascent to the second position globally puts him ahead of renowned tech leaders such as Microsoft’s Satya Nadella and Google’s Sundar Pichai. Only Tencent’s Huateng Ma stands ahead of Ambani in this global ranking. 

The Brand Guardianship Index acknowledges Ambani’s strategic approach to balancing the interests of employees, investors, and the wider society.

Noteworthy Rankings and Tata Sons Chairman’s Rise:

Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran has secured the fifth position, a notable improvement from his eighth position in the 2023 ranking. 

This indicates a positive trajectory in his brand guardianship approach.

The diversified conglomerate category sees Ambani securing the top spot, outperforming global giants like Satya Nadella, Sundar Pichai, Tim Cook, and Elon Musk.

ESG’s Dominance in CEO Reputation:

Brand Finance’s survey highlights the increasing significance of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors in determining CEO reputation. 

A key finding reveals that being regarded as a ‘sustainability champion’ is the single most important driver, accounting for 14% of the variation in reputation scores. This places emphasis on CEOs actively participating in sustainable business practices.

Balanced Scorecard Approach:

Brand Finance utilizes a balanced scorecard approach to measure CEOs’ ability to act as stewards of their company’s brand and long-term value. 

Ambani achieved a Brand Guardianship Index (BGI) score of 80.3, just below Huateng Ma’s 81.6. This underscores Ambani’s well-rounded approach to leadership.
