New Safety Rules for School Transportation by Gujarat Govt

Ahead of the new academic session set to begin on June 13, the Gujarat state government’s transport department has issued stringent safety rules for school transportation.

These regulations apply to school vans, buses, and auto-rickshaws and are designed to ensure the safe commute of students.

Key Safety Rules:

1. Seating Capacity Limits:
   • The number of students allowed to be seated can be up to twice the vehicle’s seating capacity for students aged 12 years and under.
   • For students over 12 years old, the number of students must not exceed the vehicle’s designated seating capacity.
2. Mandatory Safety Equipment:
   • All school buses must have fire extinguishers and a fire alarm protection system.
   • Vehicles must undergo fitness checks to properly install CNG or LPG kits.
3. Speed Limits:
   • Speed limits will be strictly enforced for all school vehicles to enhance safety.

Responsibilities and Enforcement:

• School Administrators:
  • They must regularly check school vans to ensure compliance with the new safety rules.
  • They must also communicate these regulations to parents to ensure community awareness and cooperation.
• District Education Officers and District Primary Education Officers:
  • The transport department has instructed them to inform school administrators and parents about the new safety rules.
• Transport Department:
  • The department will monitor adherence to these regulations and take legal action against violations, especially in cases where seating capacity rules for children over 12 are breached.
