Onion prices: Maharashtra Farmers on streets to protest

The foot march has been cancelled as the Maharashtra government gave them assurance over their needs.

Maharashtra farmers, who were on a long foot rally and leading from Nashik to Mumbai to lure the state government’s attention towards a slew of needs, have called off their rage today.

According to farmer leader Jiva Pandu Gavit, as cited by news firm ANI, the foot protest has been called off as the government assured them of their needs.

“Farmers have chosen to end their rage and have called off their March towards Mumbai. Protesting growers have begun to return from Shahpur to their respective homes. We have fixed it after govt’s assurance to us,” he was cited as saying by ANI. Gavit is a Communist Party of India (CPI) head and has been spearheading the protest.

Thane collector Ashok Shingare told all those who partook in the morcha have gone and returned to their houses in Nashik. “We had set a special train, and a few trains were given more halts at Vasind from where they went. Now there is no one at the place,” he said.

Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde told the state body that he had talks with the farmers’ representatives, after which farmers decided to go back.

Farmers have set a 17-point charter need, including the lowest support price for onions, quick settlement for crop losses due to the unseasonal showers, forest rights, electricity bill release, and fair crop price.
