Twenty-six-year-old Suparna Santosh Kalamkar, who earlier was a banker, confidently flaunts a police constable’s fresh uniform.
Kalamkar, whose father, Santosh, 51, died due to Covid-19 in August, was named, together with 74 others, as a constable throughout the Thane Police Commissioner’s Office in her father’s position.
She said this was the dream of her father to salute her during duty, and she is now going to aspire with sincerity and dignity to serve.
Director-General of Police, Maharashtra Hemant Nagrale stated:
Approximately 75 family members of police officers who lose their lives on duty or because of Covid-19 is introduced by the Thane police commissioner.
Thirty-four of them had a father or a mother who had died due to the deadly virus. Letters of appointment have been given to them by Hemant Nagrale, Director General of Police, Maharashtra.
As Suparna Santosh Kalamkar stated:
“I finished my Bachelor of Management Studies (BMS) and also worked at a private bank although studying for MPSC as well as UPSC tests,” Kalamkar said. My dad wanted me to be a police officer, so he could salute me on duty. In August, he died suddenly, but I now have an opportunity to fulfil his wish.
Leena Ghansham Salgaonkar another beneficiary stated:
Another beneficiary, Leena Ghansham Salgaonkar, was named as a constable since her father Ghansham died because of Covid, seeking her masters in commerce.
She says, “I lost my father during July and also received a letter from the Thane Commissioner within the week asking any qualified family member to join the duty of a police constable. I’ve got an older sister that’s married.
So, I was asked by my mom for taking up the job. We sent the documents as well as I got the letter of appointment as well. On Saturday, they asked us to enter as a police constable, but I will see that in the future I appear for examinations and obtain the officer’s place, she said.
Nagrale said it was important to take such initiatives throughout every commissioner as well as the district. I can see that it is achieved on the basis of priority. This will allow our police department’s members of the family to create their lives.
Police Commissioner Thane Vivek Phansalkar announced that at least 34 policemen had lost their lives because of Covid.
Many of my police officers and staff were frontline employees as well as we were told that they would take care of their families. “We will be behind our police force as well as are delighted to have fulfilled our duty to their families,” he said.
