On Saturday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi took a sharp swipe at the government over updated estimates suggesting that the economy may contract by 7.7% this financial year, compared to the decrease in the gross domestic product and per capita income with an unemployment rate of 9.1. “Too many Vikas,” Rahul Gandhi’s Twitter punchline said.

Gandhi’s tweet attack arrives after the first advanced estimate was released by the National Statistical Office (NSO). It projected that India’s gross domestic product (GDP) would contract by 7.7 per cent during its financial year.

The worst economic performance by India in the last 60 yrs:

This is 20 basis points more than just the 7.5 per cent contraction predicted by the Monetary Policy Committee of the central bank. It would also be India’s lowest economic performance in at last 60 years if the economy were to mirror the forecasts of the government’s leading statistical body.

However, India’s official estimate indicates a far better performance than the estimates made by multilateral institutions, such as the World Bank as well as the International Monetary Fund, with projections of (-)9.6% as well as (-)10.3%, respectively.

The Congressional leader had previously blasted the government’s response to the continuing unrest of farmers in his continued attacks on the government.

“For the benefit of their imperialist mates, the Modi government has betrayed the ‘anna data’ of the nation. The farmers, through their agitation, have talked. It is the responsibility of all of us, he tweeted in Hindi, to lift the voice of the ‘annadata’ and support their demands.

Rahul Gandhi, in another tweet: 

Peaceful unrest is an intrinsic part of democracy. The farmers’ movement is receiving support from across the country. “In their support, you should indeed raise your voice and reinforce the voice of farmers so that the anti-agricultural laws are repealed,” he mentioned in another tweet.
