Every year on March 8, International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated to honour the social, economic, cultural, and political successes of women and to promote awareness of the ongoing fight for gender equality around the world.

Origin of International Women’s Day:

As women in Europe and the United States started to organize and fight for better working conditions, suffrage, and women’s rights in the early 20th century, that is when International Women’s Day (IWD) first began.

The Socialist Party of America backed the formation of the first National Woman’s Day in the United States on February 28, 1909.

During an international conference of working women in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1910, the proposal of an international women’s day was floated.

The first International Women’s Day was marked on March 19, 1911, in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland.

Rallies, marches, and speeches were held to support women’s suffrage, the freedom to work, and an end to discrimination and violence against women.

In the following years, this Day became a global movement. Women’s rights activists used the day to stage protests, strikes, and other actions to demand equal rights and opportunities for women.

The UN first acknowledged the big Day in 1975; since then, it has grown in recognition as a worldwide event.

The Day continues to be a day of activism and advocacy, with women’s organizations and activists using the day to highlight important issues such as gender-based violence, reproductive rights, economic inequality, and political representation.

It is also a day to celebrate the achievements of women in all fields and recognize women’s ongoing contributions to society.
