Rishi Sunak reveals his tax returns since 2019; paid over £1m

Rishi Sunak paid around £1m in UK tax over the previous three years, details of the prime minister’s financial statements reveal.

The UK tax was paid on incomes of approximately £4.7m from earnings and a US-based investment fund.

Rishi Sunak finally reveals his tax return details:

Mr Sunak first announced he would reveal a tax return during his not-so-good campaign to be a Tory head last year. He encountered calls to be transparent about his earnings after it appeared his wife, Akshata Murty, had non-dom status.

The tax data came as MPs questioned ex-Prime Minister Boris Johnson over whether he deceived MPs over Partygate.

Mr Sunak is considered one of the wealthiest MPs in Parliament, and his personal finances are something opposition parties have usually used as a political attack thing.

The PM was in finance before entering politics. He and his relatives are thought to own some properties, including a Grade II-listed mansion house in his North Yorkshire constituency.

According to the data, in the previous financial year alone, 2021-2022, the prime minister made more than £1.9m in revenue and capital gains.

Before this month, during a visit to Paris for discussions with French President Emmanuel Macron, Mr Sunak told he had been too “busy” to reveal sooner. Labour said it was right Mr Sunak had shown his tax returns “after much delay.”

The party’s deputy director Angela Rayner stated: “They show a tax system designed by next Tory governments in which the prime minister pays a far lower surcharge rate than working people who face the highest tax load in 70 years.”

The Liberal Democrats told Mr Sunak “snuck” the data out “whilst the world is diverted with Boris Johnson’s Partygate grilling”.

Mr Sunak said he was happy to show his tax return “in the interests of transparency.”
