Russia threatens to destroy fighter planes given by the allies of Ukraine

Russia has been intimidated to destroy any fighter planes given to Ukraine by its allies after two nations vowed planes.

Slovakia became the following Nato nation to promise Kyiv some MiG-29 planes on Friday, a day after Poland.

Poland and Slovakia have vowed to send fighter jets to Ukraine:

Slovakia’s caravan was grounded last year and no longer uses the planes. Ukraine has requested Western nations for modern fighter planes, but these are seen only as long-term prospects because of long training periods.

It sees extra aircraft required for defences and potential counter-attacks a year after Russia’s attack.

Other Nato nations are considering sending aircraft such as the MiG-29 – a standard which dates from the period of the Soviet Union – which Ukrainian captains are trained to fly.

Kremlin representative Dmitry Peskov criticised the plans, saying that the plane would not impact the result of Moscow’s “special military operation”, as it calls the battle.

He said they would “bring additional anguish for Ukraine and the Ukrainian people.” “Of course, during the certain military operation, all this kit will be subject to destruction,” the representative said.

The Polish and Slovak commitments are an optimistic move for Ukraine – which has more pilots than aircraft – but will not make an assertive difference. The Ukrainians say what they really require is US-made F-16 fighters.
