The Premier League on Saturday
confirmed that after the second batch of testing, two people from two premier
league clubs have tested positive for coronavirus. This comes in addition to
the previous six persons tested positive for Coronavirus from the
top-flight English clubs, since the players returned to small groups training
on Tuesday.
The Premier League issued a
statement on Saturday giving the information on the dates of the tests
conducted, i.e. on Tuesday 19th May, Thursday 21st May and Friday 22nd May. It
also said that 996 personnel were tested on the above dates. PL reports that
the persons who have tested positive will have to self-isolate for a period of
seven days. Out of respect for the individuals, Premier League will not reveal
the identity of persons who tested positive.
Among the earlier six positive
cases were Burnley’s Assistant Manager Ian Woan, Watford’s player Adrian
Mariappa and two club members from the non-playing staff, who are still in
self-isolation of seven days. According to Watford’s manager Nigel Pearson, two
Watford players are in self-isolation after coming in close contact with the
infected persons at the club. The UK government has given its nod for
top-flight football to resume from 1st June onward. The Premier League is
suspended since two months due to the global pandemic and hopes to resume in
June-mid.
On Monday and Tuesday, another
round of tests will be conducted and the results will be discussed in the
meeting of all 20 clubs to decide whether phase two of training, i.e.
full-contact training can be initiated.
Britain has witnessed 36,675
deaths due to the coronavirus pandemic, the highest death toll in Europe.
