In retaliation to the US ordering Chinese
Consulate’s closure in Houston, China sought to shut down the US’s Consulate in
Chengdu.
The consulate of the United States in Chengdu, China has shut down, revealed the country’s
administration. Last week the US ordered the Chinese Consulate in Houston to
close its operations and in retaliation, China also did the same with the US Consulate in Chengdu.
American flag lowered at the
Chengdu’s consulate of the US:
A statement from the State Department revealed that the consulate shut down its operations on Monday at 10 am. It said that the US will try to continue its outreach to the concerned region via its other missions in the Asian country and also expressed disappointment at China’s decision. As per the state media, the American flag was taken down at a US consulate in southwestern China and officials vacated the premises under the order of the Chinese government. State broadcaster CCTV said that at the US mission in the capital of Sichuan province, Chengdu, on Monday at 6.18 am; the American flag was lowered.
The Police cordoned off the
area and blocked the view of the US consulate:
Police have cordoned off the
area around the consulate and cut off any view of the property. On Sunday
afternoon, trucks arrived at the US consulate and left a few hours late. Later
in the night, flatbed trailers entered that complex and another emerged later,
which carried a large shipping container and a crane. The police made metal
barriers along the sidewalk and shut the street in front of the consulate. No
placards were allowed to be displayed, no normal citizen who stopped by to take
a selfie was entertained and they were asked to leave the cordoned area.
The US had ordered China to
shut down its Houston consulate because they alleged China of stealing crucial
date from facilities in Texas, and that it was a nest of Chinese spies. China
had denied the allegations and in retort ordered the US’s Chengdu consulate’s
closure.
