India’s incredible run in the 2022 Commonwealth Games continued as Achinta Sheuli won gold in the men’s 73kg event, setting a Commonwealth Games record. After lifting 143kg in the snatch, he lifted 170kg on his third clean and jerk attempt for a total of 313kg.

In the snatch section, the junior world championship silver medalist recorded three clean lifts of 137kg, 140kg, and 143kg. Sheuli’s 143kg attempt broke the Games record while improving his personal best.

Achinta Sheuli born on November 24, 2001, into a very low-income family in West Bengal’s Howrah district. Because he came from a low-income family, he felt compelled to stitch and embroider for his family’s survival with his brother after their father died. Achinta’s father was a construction worker. Following his father’s untimely death, the 20-year-old began weightlifting.

Sheuli then joined the Army Sports Institute in 2015, where she excelled. As a result, Sheuli was selected for the Indian National Camp the same year. He worked with ASI in 2016 and 2017 and has been a part of the National camp since 2018.
