Head Coach stresses patience and team continuity.

India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir has spoken candidly about leaving teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi out of the recent T20I series against Afghanistan. At just 15, Sooryavanshi has already impressed with his batting form, but Gambhir explained that international opportunities are shaped by long‑term team dynamics rather than immediate popularity.

In an appearance on Follow the Blues: Gautam Gambhir Unfiltered, the former opener revealed he had a direct conversation with the youngster. “Yes, he was in good form, but I made him understand that sometimes, because of players who have performed consistently, he will have to wait for his opportunity,” Gambhir said. He added that external noise or social media campaigns do not influence the playing eleven, which the coach and captain decide based on which combination can win matches.

India has preferred the opening pair of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma for over a year. Gambhir acknowledged that while it is tempting to reward emerging talent, dropping established performers after a few failures would undermine the squad’s sense of security. “If Vaibhav plays today, then it becomes a tough conversation with whoever we leave out. We cannot suddenly ignore a combination that has created impact over the last one and a half years,” he explained.

Sooryavanshi’s absence from the Afghanistan series sparked debate among fans and former players, many of whom questioned Gambhir’s approach. However, the head coach insisted that continuity is essential for building a resilient team. “It is easy to take popular decisions, but tougher to take the right ones. We chose continuity with Sanju and Abhishek because one bad series does not make them bad players, nor does it make us a bad side,” he said.

Gambhir also reminded critics that no team has ever gone from one World Cup to the next unbeaten. Setbacks, he argued, are part of the journey, and the focus must remain on long‑term stability rather than short‑term reactions.

For Sooryavanshi, the message is clear: his talent is undeniable, but patience will be key. For Gambhir, the challenge lies in balancing the excitement around a prodigious teenager with the responsibility of maintaining trust and consistency in a side aiming for sustained success.
