The guy allegedly performed a few black magic rituals inside a crematorium and posted a video of it on social media.
In a significant development, Gujarat police arrested a 29-year-old man for allegedly conducting rituals inside a crematorium and sharing a video of the act on social media, claiming to possess supernatural powers.
The arrest marks the first case registered under the newly enacted Gujarat Prevention and Eradication of Human Sacrifice and Other Inhuman, Evil, and Aghori Practices and Black Magic Act, as confirmed by officials on Friday.
Details of the Incident
The accused, identified as Ashwin Makwana, was arrested on October 15 after a video of him performing the rituals at a crematorium in Dhoraji town, Rajkot district, went viral.
In the video, Makwana is seen conducting rituals inside the crematorium, which is managed by the local municipality in the Kumbharwada area. At one point, he is seen circling a pyre and lying on it while reciting incantations, purportedly invoking supernatural powers.
First Case Under New Law
Inspector RJ Godham, the complainant in the First Information Report (FIR), confirmed that this was the first FIR filed under the new law, which came into effect on September 2.
“When we tried to upload the FIR on our eGujCop platform on October 15, we realized that no code had been assigned to this Act, indicating no FIRs had been registered under it before. A code was generated later, making our police station the first to file an FIR under this law,” Godham explained.
Gujarat’s Black Magic Law
The Gujarat Prevention and Eradication of Human Sacrifice and Other Inhuman, Evil, and Aghori Practices and Black Magic Act was passed by the Gujarat assembly on August 21 and came into force following the governor’s assent.
The law aims to curb the menace of black magic, superstitions, and other inhuman practices that can lead to exploitation and harm.
This arrest underscores the state’s commitment to tackling such harmful and illegal practices under the new legislation.
