Khalid Jamil stresses focus and lessons over scoreline.

India’s clash with Brazil at Kolkata’s Salt Lake Stadium ended in a 0-4 defeat, but head coach Khalid Jamil insisted the real story lay beyond the scoreline. For him, the match was a harsh reminder of how lapses in concentration and individual mistakes can undo even the most determined effort against world-class opposition.

Jamil acknowledged that errors, particularly in the first half proved decisive. Goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu’s mistakes contributed to Brazil’s early advantage, yet the coach refused to single him out, emphasizing that defensive lapses across the team created those situations. “You cannot blame just one player,” he said, stressing that the team lacked focus at crucial moments.

Despite the heavy defeat, India did not simply sit back. The defensive line frustrated Brazil’s attackers at times, with Vinicius Jr repeatedly caught offside. In midfield, Sahal Abdul Samad showed composure, while Ryan Williams emerged as India’s most direct attacking outlet, coming close to scoring before Brazil cleared off the line. These glimpses of promise highlighted India’s ability to challenge, even if briefly, against elite opposition.

Jamil was candid about his disappointment with the substitutes. India made 11 changes during the game, but he felt too many failed to rise to the occasion. For him, the issue was not just technical ability but mental strength. “Maybe they did not have the belief,” he admitted, urging his players to treat every opportunity as decisive.

The coach’s broader takeaway was clear: matches against teams like Brazil expose every weakness. Sustained concentration, defensive resilience, and belief are non-negotiable when facing opponents of this calibre. He underlined the need for India to play more such fixtures to gain invaluable experience, insisting that his squad had given everything in effort but must now learn to maintain intensity for the full ninety minutes.

Among the positives, Jamil praised Williams, Manvir Singh, and Anirudh Thapa for their contributions, noting that India’s attacking transitions did create moments of discomfort for Brazil. Yet the margins were unforgiving- Brazil absorbed India’s best spells and punished every slip.

With Uruguay next on the schedule, Jamil’s focus has already shifted. The lessons from Brazil’s visit, he stressed, will only matter if India applies them immediately. Concentration, defensive discipline, and confidence in attack remain the pillars India must build on to compete at this level.
