A 93-year-old man from Chhattisgarh’s naxal-infested Kanker district is voting for the first time during this year’s assembly elections.
The nonagenarian’s name was added to the voter list as part of a door-to-door campaign initiated in the district by District Collector Priyanka Shukla.
Sher Singh Hedko voting for the first time:
Sher Singh Hedko (93), a resident of hamlet Bhainsakanhar (K) in the Bhanupratappur assembly seat, would vote for the first time in this assembly election.
Even after several years, his name was not added to the list. Furthermore, inaccuracies in documentation could be a contributing cause.
The nonagenarian is thrilled to register his active involvement in the democratic activity and choose his representative now that his name has been added to the voters’ list, according to Hedko’s family, citing him because he cannot speak properly.
In the district, a voter awareness campaign is underway. Booth Level Officers (BLOs) are conducting door-to-door campaigns to register the names of eligible people left off the voter list.
District Collector Priyanka Shukla on the issue:
As part of this campaign, BLO Rajendra Kosma discovered that the name of Sher Singh’s granddaughter had not been put on the list and that he had not utilized his voting rights even once.
Following this, Sher Singh’s formalities were completed. “It is a remarkable achievement of our BLOs that they approached those left off the voters’ list for various reasons by visiting people on their front doors and ensuring the addition of their names.”
“By acting proactively, the BLOs added names of people by assisting them in arranging necessary documents, and during this exercise, the name of Sher Singh Hedko was also added,” Kanker District Collector Priyanka Shukla stated.
Furthermore, the names of several elderly people in the Antagarh and Bhanupratappur blocks were added this time, she said, praising BLOs, EROs (Electoral Registration Officers), & the SVEEP (Systematic Voter Education and Electoral Participation) team for their efforts.
