PM Modi Reviews Yamuna River Cleanup Plan, Sets Timelines for Action
New Delhi:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a high-level review meeting on Thursday to assess the current status of the Yamuna river and to evaluate both ongoing and future efforts aimed at cleaning and rejuvenating the heavily polluted water body. The meeting saw participation from key leaders and top officials, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Union Minister for Jal Shakti, Delhi Chief Minister, and MP Rekha Gupta, along with senior representatives from various agencies.
The Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) in Delhi issued a statement following the meeting, confirming that a comprehensive agency-wise action plan had been reviewed. The plan outlines short-term, medium-term, and long-term activities aimed at tackling pollution and restoring the ecological health of the Yamuna river.
According to the CMO, the cleanup strategy has been categorized into:
- Short-term actions (0–3 months)
- Medium-term actions (3 months to 1.5 years)
- Long-term actions (1.5 to 3 years)
These phases will guide the implementation of projects based on urgency, scale, and sustainability. The review emphasized that strict timelines would be enforced to ensure that progress is visible and measurable at every stage.
Key Focus Areas of the Cleanup Plan
During the meeting, officials discussed a range of core areas critical to the success of the Yamuna rejuvenation initiative. These include:
- Drain management to prevent untreated wastewater from entering the river
- Sewage and septage management to improve sanitation infrastructure
- Solid waste and dairy waste management
- Industrial waste regulation
- Identification of gaps in existing wastewater treatment facilities
- Floodplain protection and riverfront development
- Public outreach to create awareness and ensure citizen participation
Special attention was given to enhancing the flow of clean water in the Yamuna, which remains a major challenge due to urban encroachments and waste discharge from upstream sources. The plan also includes the development of green zones along the riverbanks to promote biodiversity and provide aesthetic and recreational value to residents.
A Unified Approach
The meeting highlighted the importance of inter-agency coordination and accountability. With multiple stakeholders involved, including central ministries, the Delhi government, and municipal bodies, the Prime Minister emphasized a collaborative and time-bound approach to deliver results.
The Yamuna, considered sacred by many, flows through the heart of Delhi but has long suffered from severe pollution. Thursday’s meeting marks a renewed push by the central and state leadership to restore the river to a healthier and cleaner state.
As per officials, progress on the action plan will be closely monitored, and follow-up reviews will ensure that the mission to clean the Yamuna remains on track.
