Referee and family receive death threats after the Scottish League football game

The BBC understands that a referee and his partner have received death threats after Saturday’s Old Firm football game.

The Scottish Football Association stated Kevin Clancy was targeted after his contact details were posted online following the Celtic v Rangers match.

Offensive messages sent to Mr Clancy were also directed at his kids. The SFA has referred the case to Police Scotland, but a force representative said it still required to receive the correspondence.

During the Scottish Premiership game, which Celtic won 3-2, the referee disallowed a first-half goal by Rangers forward Alfredo Morelos.

A representative for the Ibrox club stated: “Rangers charges in the strongest terms any abuse of game officials. We are all emotional about our game, but targeted, personal abuse of referees cannot be accepted.”

The message said the Rangers were “astonished” by the decision to chalk off Morelos’ goal. Ex-top-flight official Steve Conroy said the abuse led at Mr Clancy was “absolutely disgusting.”

He told BBC Radio’s Good Morning Scotland agenda: “It is appalling that anybody personally and anybody’s family can be targeted throughout a football match.”

“It is impenetrable.”

Mr Conroy said the abuse of match referees was not new but continued the problem had heightened since he retired due to social media.
