UFC athlete Conor McGregor was charged with sexually assaulting a woman after an NBA Finals basketball match in Miami earlier this month.

A legal letter summarising allegations, sent to Mr McGregor and seen by BBC News, says the alleged assault occurred in a washroom at Kaseya Center.

Conor McGregor sexually assaulted a woman after an NBA game:

A solicitor representing Mr McGregor said: “The allegations are false. Mr McGregor will not be intimidated.”

The City of Miami Police said an inquiry had been started.

In a report, UFC said it was aware of the charges and was gathering further data. The Miami Heat hosted the NBA Finals match and said it ran a full investigation.

The woman’s attorney, Ariel Mitchell, said her client had been watching match four of the NBA Finals on Friday, 9 June, before the alleged incident occurred.

In the legal note to Mr McGregor, Ms Mitchell alleged that security guards from the NBA and Miami Heat pushed the woman into a men’s washroom before being violently physically assaulted by Mr McGregor.

The letter claimed the lady could free herself from the toilet but left behind her purse, which she is said to have recovered after arguing with security guards.

It alleges that security for the league, squad and arena “aided and abetted” Mr McGregor by trapping and isolating her in the restroom. In an interview, Ms Mitchell said she had received video footage showing a segment of the alleged incident.

A police report linking to the incident was made on Sunday, 11 June, the City of Miami Police informed BBC News. “This is an open investigation so that no additional information can be released at this time,” a police department representative said.

Mr McGregor’s arrival at the NBA Finals made headlines after the Irish ex-champion hit the Miami Heat’s mascot during half-time in an apparent action for a pain relief spray he was promoting.

The individual acting as the mascot was taken to a local hospital for cure after the incident, the Athletic said.
