Every year on October 10, World Mental Health Day is observed to raise awareness about mental health worldwide and mobilize efforts to support those experiencing mental health issues.

According to World Health Organization (WHO) data, the COVID-19 pandemic increased the prevalence of anxiety and depression by 25% worldwide. Depression also anxiety account for an estimated 12 billion lost working days each year, costing the global economy nearly $1 trillion, according to the WHO.

World Mental Health Day was establish as an annual activity of the World Federation for Mental Health on October 10, 1992. The day began without a specific theme, intending to advocate for mental health also educate the public on relevant issues.

The popularity of the day grew with each passing year. Women also Mental Health (1996), Children and Mental Health (1997), Mental Health also Human Rights (1998). And Mental Health and Aging (1998) were some of its early themes (1999). “Make mental health also well-being for all a global priority,” is the theme of World Mental Health Day 2022.

World Mental Health Day preparations begin months in advance; in some countries, the programme lasts several days or weeks.

According to a WHO report, one in every seven Indians suffered from mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety, and other severe conditions between 1990 and 2017.
