Lionel Messi’s Barcelona, humbled, humiliated and
destroyed by the attacking flair of Bayern Munich, which gave them a titanic
loss against the German club.
Barcelona plunged
to its biggest defeat since the 1940s, as the German giants, Bayern Munich
annihilated them. Munich won 8-2 against Barcelona in the quarterfinals of the
UEFA Champions League. Bayern Munich conceded the first goal in the match
with David Alaba scoring an own goal, but they soon were level and rushed to a
4-1 lead against Barcelona at halftime, with two goals from Thomas Muller, and
Ivan Perisic, Serge Gnabry scoring the other two. Post the interval, Bayern
Munich upped their game and humbled the Spanish giants 8-2.
Gerard Pique calls the 2-8 loss
to Bayern Munich, an embarrassment:
Barcelona defender Gerard Pique in a post-match interview said that it was a disastrous result, an embarrassment, and is unacceptable. The humiliating defeat ended a forgettable season for Barcelona and it is for the first time since 2008, that the club has not won a significant title. That was the same time when Lionel Messi became the magician he is today.
Largest margin of defeat for
Barcelona since 1951:
For the first time since 1946, Barcelona conceded eight goals in a single game after Joshua Kimmich, Robert Lewandowski, and Philippe Coutinho (twice) inflicted more misery in the second half. Barcelona has also failed to qualify for the semifinals of the prestigious tournament for 4 out of 5 times. Barcelona manager Quique Setien’s time as a manager is said to end after he failed to guide his side to any piece of silverware this season, and he pointed out, how painful the defeat felt. Bayern Munich’s coach Hansi Flick rallied his players to stay focused onto the next game and reminded the press that semifinals will start from 0-0 score-line.
Bayern will face the winners of
the quarterfinal between Manchester City and Lyon in the semifinals of the
Champions League.
