Legendary playback singer S Janaki, fondly remembered as the Nightingale of South India, passed away in Mysuru on Saturday at the age of 88. News of her demise sent shockwaves through the Indian film and music fraternity, with leaders and celebrities pouring in condolences on social media through the day.

PM Modi Calls Her Songs a Lasting Legacy

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep grief over her passing, describing it as a profound loss to India’s musical and cultural landscape. He noted that her songs, rendered across numerous languages, resonated with generations of listeners and captured every emotion with rare grace and versatility. The Prime Minister said her melodies would continue to captivate audiences for years to come and extended his condolences to her family, admirers, and the broader music community.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay also mourned her passing, calling it an irreplaceable loss to the world of music. Actors Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Boney Kapoor, and Chiranjeevi were among the many film personalities who shared heartfelt tributes, recalling her extraordinary contribution to Indian cinema and music over several decades.
