Senior government officials said the killing of live birds was immediately started at Mayur Vihar Phase 2 around 8 am on Monday in Sanjay Lake Park. The park was declared the “alert zone” from Sunday after 17 further ducks in the green area were found dead. Slaughtering in more fields will soon follow, said one of the officials.

A second senior government official stated, as effective precautionary action, more parks were likely to be closed in the National Capital, instructions for which will be given later in the day by the respective authorities.
On Saturday, as a preventative measure, at least four major district parks in Hauz Khaz, Dwarka Sector 9, Hastsal as well as Sanjay Lake was shut down by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), which manages most of the large parks in the area.
The reports reached early Monday morning from the National Institute of High-Security Animal Disease, ICAR, Bhopal.
The animal husbandry department member Dr Rakesh Singh stated:
“On Monday morning, eight of the 109 samples sent to different laboratories tested positive for avian influenza. As the protocol enters into force when a single case is registered in the region, we would not have to wait for more confirmed cases,’ said Dr Rakesh Singh of the Department of Animal Husbandry.
Singh said the eight sample results were those of dead crows as well as ducks collected from Sanjay Lake Park in Mayur Vihar Phase 2, Dwarka Sector 9 through Mayur Vihar Phase 3, which tested positive for bird flu.

The decision came a day after the government of Delhi declared the closure of the 10-day wholesale poultry market in Ghazipur as well as prohibiting the import of live birds into the capital as a protective measure to avoid the possible spread of bird flu.
