Breaking! Drugs found in White House, US secret service to investigate further

The US Secret Service is probing after drugs found in White House on Sunday evening.

The find in the West Wing, which has the Oval Office and other working spaces for presidential assistants and staff, led to a quick evacuation.

Secret Service agents say the suspicious drugs found in White House in a place unrestricted to tour groups while doing a periodic inspection. President Joe Biden and his family were at Camp David in Maryland then.

A senior law enforcement officer told the BBC’s US counterpart CBS News cocaine was found in a storage facility regularly used by White House staff and guests to keep mobile phones.

The White House complex was shut as a precaution at about 20:45 local time (00:45 GMT) on Sunday after it was found. A primary test reported by the Washington Post later proved it was cocaine.

The Secret Service will thoroughly review how the drugs got into the White House, officers told CBS. They said cameras and entrance records would be reviewed to determine who had entry to the area where it was discovered.

Cocaine is a Schedule II narcotic under the Controlled Substances Act, meaning it has a high possibility for abuse, according to the US Drug Enforcement Administration.
