The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) claimed that Delhi reported the lower minimum temperature during the season at 3.5 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, noting that it could fall further on Thursday.
The temperature fell to 3.5 degrees Celsius:
The minimum temperature reported at the Safdarjung observatory, which would be considered to be the city’s official marker, dropped to 3.5 degrees Celsius early Wednesday. That was three degrees below average for the season.
The maximum temperature reached 16.4 degrees Celsius, which was four notches below average for the season.
Head of IMD’s regional weather forecasting centre Kuldeep Srivastava stated:
The minimum temperature was 5.2 degrees Celsius at the Palam observatory, whereas the maximum temperature was about 15.2 degrees Celsius there.
Kuldeep Srivastava, head of the regional weather forecast centre for IMD, reported, “The minimum temperature is predicted to drop to about 3 degrees Celsius on Thursday.”
However, from Friday, the temperature will begin to rise,’ says Srivastava. He added that New Year’s Day is expected to bring relaxation as the minimum temperature on January 2 and 3 is expected to rise to about 5 degrees Celsius and about 7 degrees Celsius.
Between January 4, a new western disorder is likely to strike the western Himalayan region, which may give light rains as well as thundershowers to the plains, including Delhi. This will be an active western disturbance, and the temperature will increase alongside light rain,” he added.
According to CPCB:
Meanwhile, as per Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) recordings, the air quality from Wednesday worsened slightly as AQI dropped to 290 in the low category. The daily average AQI was 265 on Tuesday, also from the poor zone.
However, IMD scientists have warned that pollution levels are likely to increase in the upcoming days.
As VK Soni stated:
VK Soni, head of the environmental monitoring and research centre of IMD, said that from Wednesday night, air quality would deteriorate and hit the very poor zone.
AQI is forecast to remain in a very bad zone for the next two days. But from Saturday, the air quality will show a substantial change, with the effect of an active western disturbance moving over Delhi,” Soni said.
As per the Air Quality Monitoring Centre:
The Air Quality Monitoring Centre of the Union Ministry of Earth Science, System of Air Quality and also Weather Forecasting And Research (Safar), also reported that “quiet surface winds with lower boundary layer height would lead between 31 December and 1 January to incredibly low ventilation situations.”
As per the Safar analysis:
On New Year’s Eve, AQI can also hit extreme categories for a short time. By January 3, a western disturbance is expected to affect the area, and enhanced surface airspeed, ventilation as well as rainfall are expected to bring relief, according to the Safar analysis.
