Gunfight in Manipur caused 9 deaths on Tuesday; read the report

Police reported on Wednesday that nine people were murdered and ten others were injured in a gunfight that occurred in Agijang village on the border between Imphal East and Kangpokpi districts between 10 and 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday when a gang of armed assailants arrived in the region in ethnic violence-hit Manipur.

The shootout erupted after security officers rushed to confront the attackers. “There was a shooting in the village around 10:30 p.m., and nine people were killed, and ten others were injured.” “All injured have been admitted to hospital, with one in critical condition,” said Imphal East police superintendent K Shivakanta Singh.

He stated that the Assam Rifles are responsible for security in the area where the new fatalities were reported. Singh further stated that the area’s situation had been controlled.

Since May 3, unrest between the tribal Kukis, who largely live in the hill areas, and the Meiteis, the dominant community in Imphal Valley, has killed at least 115 people and displaced another 40,000.

The violence erupted following a protest against a court judgement giving Meities scheduled tribe status. The state was rapidly immersed in violence.

The authorities imposed a curfew and shut off the internet. Additional security troops were dispatched to the state when skirmishes erupted, but emotions remained high.

On Monday, key civil society organisations from the warring Meitei and Kuki communities refused to participate in a peace committee formed by the Union government to mediate peace in the state.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced the group’s formation on June 1 as part of efforts to defuse tensions.
