Karun Nair’s Double Drop Costs Delhi Capitals ₹89 Lakh Against Punjab Kings

Karun Nair’s Double Drop Costs Delhi Capitals ₹89 Lakh Against Punjab Kings

Delhi Capitals posted a mammoth 264 on the board, powered by KL Rahul’s blistering unbeaten 152 and Nitish Rana’s 91. Yet, despite that imposing total, they walked away on the losing side — and the blame falls squarely on two moments of fielding negligence from Karun Nair.

The Costly Reprieve That Swung the Match

With Punjab Kings at 202/4 after 14.5 overs, still requiring 63 runs off 31 balls, Delhi had the game in their grasp. Shreyas Iyer, then on 28 off 20 balls, miscued towards long-off — and Karun Nair dropped him cold. Just one delivery later, at 15.2, Shreyas miscued again towards long-on. Nair was the fielder. He dropped him again. Two chances, two failures, one devastating outcome.

Shreyas Made Delhi Pay Instantly

After the second reprieve, Shreyas shifted gears without hesitation. He hammered 43 runs off just 16 balls after the first drop alone, personally accounting for 68.25% of Punjab’s remaining runs. He finished unbeaten on 71 off 36 balls, guiding Punjab Kings to a stunning chase of 265 in 18.5 overs.

Statistical models value the first missed dismissal at ₹48.86 lakh and the second at ₹40.52 lakh in batting-consequence terms — a combined damage of ₹89.38 lakh. The direct fielding penalty for both drops stands at ₹32.03 lakh separately.

Delhi did not lose solely because Punjab batted brilliantly. They lost because, when Shreyas Iyer made mistakes, Delhi simply could not take them.
