India captain Shubman Gill produced a moment of magic on Day 3 of the opening Test against Sri Lanka in Galle, pulling off a stunning one-handed diving catch that left commentators, including former cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar, in disbelief. The effort added further pressure on the hosts, who were already reeling under India’s dominant display on the third day of play.

A Leap That Left Everyone Speechless

The dismissal came off the very first ball of the 17th over, bowled by spinner Kuldeep Yadav. Batter Kamindu Mendis advanced down the pitch and drove the ball uppishly toward extra cover, seemingly finding the gap. Gill, however, had other ideas. The Indian skipper flung himself to his left, stretching out his left hand to complete a spectacular catch inches off the turf, ensuring the ball stayed firmly in his grasp even after hitting the ground. The 26-year-old celebrated with visible delight, tossing the ball skyward before pumping his fist in the air. Manjrekar was among those who praised the effort on air, admitting the fielder “had no right” to reach that ball.

The wicket capped a dominant session for India, who had already made early inroads through Mohammed Siraj and Manav Suthar. Combined with Kuldeep Yadav’s contributions, the trio helped India seize complete control of proceedings after posting a commanding total of 462, built around Devdutt Padikkal’s impressive 167-run knock. Sri Lanka lost their fourth wicket of the innings inside the first session, leaving them under mounting scoreboard pressure.
