Rohit Sharma Closes In on Elite 12,000 ODI Runs Club

Rohit Sharma is on the cusp of a landmark achievement as India gear up for their ODI series against England, starting July 14. The 39-year-old, who now plays exclusively in the 50-over format after retiring from Tests and T20Is, showed promising form in his last outing against Afghanistan, scoring 79 followed by 48 — a marked improvement after a rough patch in the four games prior. Should this form continue, he could inch closer to a milestone that only two other Indians have ever touched.

Chasing a Historic Milestone

Rohit needs just 280 more runs to reach the 12,000-run mark in ODIs. Achieving this would make him only the third Indian cricketer, after Sachin Tendulkar (18,426 runs) and Virat Kohli (14,797 runs), to reach the milestone. Globally, he would become the seventh player overall to breach the mark, joining an elite list that includes Kumar Sangakkara, Ricky Ponting, Sanath Jayasuriya and Mahela Jayawardene. He currently sits just behind Pakistan legend Inzamam-ul-Haq on the all-time ODI run-scorers list.

Eyes on the 2027 World Cup

Beyond individual milestones, Rohit has his sights set on the 2027 World Cup, where he would be 40 years old. Having played international cricket since 2007, he is determined to add one more world title to his resume before retiring. Every innings now carries extra weight, either building his legacy or bringing him closer to bowing out on his own terms.

Rohit’s overall ODI numbers remain formidable: 11,720 runs from 285 games and 277 innings, at an average of 48.83, including 33 centuries, 62 half-centuries and a highest score of 264. As he chases fresh milestones against England, fans will be watching closely to see how much further he can extend his remarkable career tally.
