TCS Chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran on Sexual Harassment

TCS Chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran on Sexual Harassment

Natarajan Chandrasekaran, chairman of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), handled the problem of sexual harassment within the company during the financial year 2023-24.

The total number of sexual harassment complaints reported by TCS employees globally was 110, compared to 49 in the previous year.

This increase reflects the inclusion of global reports in the 2023-24 figures, whereas the 2022-23 data was limited to Indian operations, excluding non-wholly owned subsidiaries.

Size and Diversity of TCS Workforce:

TCS boasts a workforce of 601,546 employees from around 152 nationalities, with women making up 35.6% of the employee base.

Chandrasekaran highlighted that, given TCS’s size, the reported number of sexual harassment cases is within expected parameters.

Education Over Remote Work for Addressing Harassment:

Responding to a shareholder’s query on whether remote work could mitigate sexual harassment, Chandrasekaran asserted that working from home is not a solution.

Instead, he emphasized the need for education on sexual harassment to foster a safe and respectful work environment. He stressed that TCS is committed to creating careers, not just jobs, and investing in employee development while maintaining a robust institutional culture.

Natarajan Chandrasekaran Addressing the Gender Pay Gap:

Chandrasekaran also addressed concerns about the gender pay gap within TCS. The median salary for men is ₹14.8 lakh, compared to ₹10.4 lakh for women.

He explained that variations within salary bands could be due to differences in experience and levels within those bands.

He reiterated TCS’s commitment to increasing the representation of women, particularly in senior managerial roles, aiming to improve from the current 36%.
