VD Satheesan Named Kerala Chief Minister, Ending 10-Day Congress Standoff

The All India Congress Committee has named VD Satheesan as Kerala’s next Chief Minister, drawing the curtain on a tense 10-day leadership battle that gripped the state following the UDF’s decisive victory in the April 9 Assembly elections. Senior Congress leaders including Deepa Dasmunsi, Ajay Maken, and Mukul Wasnik announced the decision in Delhi, which was subsequently ratified unanimously at the Congress Legislature Party meeting in Thiruvananthapuram. Satheesan is set to be sworn in on Monday, ending over a decade of Left Democratic Front rule in the state.

Grassroots Support Tips the Balance

The contest was a three-cornered affair, with KC Venugopal commanding the backing of a majority of MLAs, Ramesh Chennithala relying on seniority, and Satheesan drawing powerful support from UDF ally IUML alongside an extraordinary wave of public sentiment. Street protests, poster campaigns, and social media mobilisation created visible pressure in his favour, with party insiders cautioning that sidelining him risked a significant grassroots backlash. Ultimately, the combination of ally support and public momentum proved decisive.

Venugopal Steps Aside Gracefully

KC Venugopal responded to the outcome with measured grace, publicly congratulating Satheesan and pledging full cooperation with the incoming government. Despite losing the Chief Ministerial bid, his strong national standing and proximity to the Congress high command suggest an expanded role at the centre remains well within reach.

Now transitioning from a combative opposition leader to head of government, Satheesan faces the immediate challenge of managing coalition dynamics, reviving Kerala’s economy, and delivering on his campaign promise of a new era focused on youth, development, and transparent governance.
