Tamil Nadu CM Vijay Approves 2% DA Hike for 1.6 Million Employees

Tamil Nadu CM Vijay Approves 2% DA Hike for 1.6 Million Employees

In one of his first major decisions as Chief Minister, Joseph Vijay has approved a 2 percent increase in the Dearness Allowance (DA) for Tamil Nadu government employees. The hike, effective from January 1, 2026, raises the DA rate from 58 percent to 60 percent, resulting in a direct boost to the monthly take-home pay of government workers across the state.

1.6 Million Beneficiaries Across the State

The decision has a far-reaching impact, directly benefiting approximately 1.6 million individuals. The beneficiaries include administrative officers, Secretariat staff, schoolteachers in remote areas, and other government employees. Retired personnel, including pensioners and family pensioners who dedicated their careers to public service, will also receive payments at the revised rate. For millions of families navigating rising living costs, this additional income provides meaningful financial relief.

₹1,230 Crore Annual Burden on State Finances

The DA revision carries a significant fiscal price tag. The Tamil Nadu government will bear an additional annual expenditure of ₹1,230 crore as a result of this hike. Despite the considerable financial commitment, the government has assured that the necessary funds will be allocated without disrupting the state’s broader development agenda. Officials have emphasised that employee welfare remains a top priority.

The DA increase is calculated on the basic salary of each employee, making the rise clearly visible in monthly pay slips. The announcement has been widely welcomed as a timely measure against inflation, reinforcing CM Vijay’s focus on the welfare of the state’s workforce from day one in office.
