When parents emphasize sports, India will produce champions: Dev Kapil

Cricket legend Kapil Dev believes that when Indian parents emphasize sports, the country will produce more champions across all sports. According to Kapil, the attitude of Indian parents toward sports has shifted dramatically over the years, but more needs to be done.

Kapil made the remarks shortly after the Indian men’s badminton team won the Thomas Cup for the first time on Sunday. “I believe it is the parents, not the children. Our country produces more doctors, scientists, and engineers because their parents want them to. So we will make all champions the day parents want their child to be a sportsperson,” Kapil said.

Kapil was the honored guest at a special event hosted by the Consulate General of India in NY. As part of the ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’ celebrations to mark India’s 75th anniversary of independence.

Members of the Indian diaspora and cricket fans attended the event.

Kapil, regarded as one of the greatest all-rounders of all time, gave an example, saying that if his daughter had to take the 10th-grade exam while also playing for Junior India, he would tell her to “go and study.”

“However, things are changing. That’s why I said that in our society, parents are more important than children.” Kapil recalled hiding his sports equipment in his school bag as a child and quietly going out to play, which has changed dramatically with parents encouraging their children to participate in sports.

“It assembles me so happy to see parents bringing their children to play today. In his remarks, Kapil stated that India, at 75, is a “young country” that has accomplished what few in the world have. According to Consul General Randhir Jaiswal. The event honors the legendary cricketer and “celebrates the game of cricket through his achievements.”
