Gir Forest National Park Implements Artificial Water Ponds

As temperatures soar in Gujarat, the Gir Forest National Park confronts the challenge of water scarcity during the scorching summer months.

To address this problem and ensure the well-being of wildlife, particularly the Asiatic lion, the forest department has implemented a proactive approach by constructing artificial water ponds.

Addressing Water Scarcity in Gir Forest National Park:

With temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius, securing a reliable water source for wildlife becomes crucial.

The forest department has strategically placed 245 artificial water ponds across the park, supplementing the existing natural waterholes. These ponds are vital for mitigating dehydration risks during the summer heatwave.

Strategic Placement and Construction:

The 172 artificial ponds are strategically located along animal migration routes and near existing watering points.

This network of ponds complements the 82 natural ponds within the park. Moreover, solar-powered water tanks are utilized to ensure a consistent water supply, minimizing environmental impact.

Commitment to Wildlife Health in Gir Forest National Park:

The forest department’s proactive measures aim to maintain a well-hydrated animal population, promoting their overall health and well-being.

The ponds will be regularly monitored and refilled to prevent any drying out and ensure water availability throughout the summer.
