Unseasonal rains threaten Gujarat’s mango crop

South Gujarat, famous as the state’s “mango bowl,” is significantly impacted, with major mango-growing areas like Surat, Navsari, and Valsad staring at heavy losses.

Impact of Western Disturbance

Untimely rains and a mild winter, attributed to a western disturbance, have severely affected Gujarat’s mango crop. The state’s prominent mango-growing regions, including Surat, Navsari, and Valsad, are facing heavy losses.

Concerns of Farmers

Farmers express worries about the destruction of standing crops just before the season, which typically begins in early May. The combination of less cold winter and unseasonal rains has resulted in lower flowering on trees and significant fruit loss due to strong winds.

Reduced Mango Yield

Agricultural experts indicate that orchards across South Gujarat are experiencing less than 35% of their usual yield. Further damage is anticipated due to the impending western disturbance, along with additional unseasonal rains and strong winds.

Meteorological Forecast

The Meteorological Department predicts continued cloudy weather for the next three days, with a decrease in temperatures followed by a subsequent rise. Thunderstorms with normal rainfall are expected in some areas between April 13th and 15th, exacerbating the situation for farmers.

Challenges in Bhavnagar District

In Bhavnagar district, particularly in Talaja taluka known for the Kesar mango variety, abnormal temperatures have led to extremely low mango production.

Premature blooming of mangoes, followed by fruit spots, indicates a high risk of crop failure. The lack of sufficient winter chill and early heat onset have disrupted the flowering process, adding to farmers’ concerns.
