India reports 26,507 fresh COVID-19 cases; tally nears 8 lakh-mark.

The death toll in India rises to 21,604 as the country continues to struggle against the Coronavirus.

On Friday, India reported fresh 26,507 COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours as the Coronavirus tally in the country inches closer to the eight-lakh-mark. The total number of cases in the country stands at 793,802 with the death toll at 21,604 as per the data released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. This is the biggest single-day spike in the number of cases and that has now become a norm. Yesterday, over 25,000 record cases were registered, and India’s Coronavirus curve is dangerously moving in a steep rise. 

Recoveries increase:

The number of recoveries in the country continues to rise, with over 4.95 lakh patients being treated and discharged but the active number of cases too, have been on the rise with more than 2.77 lakh infections. India reached the 10-million-test landmark in the past week, but the country’s improvement in building manufacturers from India is very less. More than 70% of the RT-PCR kits used in testing are imported. 

Six states witness biggest single-day spike in cases:

At least six states in India recorded their biggest single-day rise in the number of cases. The states of Karnataka with 2228 new cases, Andhra Pradesh at 1555, West Bengal with 1088, 861 new infections in Gujarat, and Odisha’s 577, witnessed their biggest daily increase in the coronavirus case-load. After Maharashtra and Delhi, Gujarat became the third state to record more than 2000 deaths from the fatal virus. Maharashtra continued its run as the worst affected COVID-19 state with recording its second-highest daily spike with fresh 6875 cases. Mumbai which was beginning to decrease the number of cases in the last few days again saw a fresh hike of 1268 cases. 

Globally over 12.3 million people have been infected to date with more than 555,000 patients dying.
