Madhuri Dixit’s Blouse in Maa Behen Becomes a Symbol of Resistance

In Netflix’s latest release Maa Behen, Madhuri Dixit delivers a compelling performance as Rekha, a single mother whose sleeveless blouse becomes the unlikely centrepiece of a larger battle against patriarchy. From the moment she enters her neighbourhood, Rekha is judged — accused of witchcraft, promiscuity, and even murdering her husband — not for her actions, but for her appearance.

When Clothing Becomes a Battleground

Despite losing her café, her reputation, and her social standing, Rekha refuses to change the one thing that represents her personal freedom — her blouse. The film uses this garment not as an object of desire, as Indian cinema so often has, but as a quiet, defiant political statement. Her stubbornness in retaining her style of dressing signals that she will not shrink herself to satisfy society’s expectations of widowhood or motherhood.

The film pointedly highlights a glaring double standard — no man in the story faces scrutiny over his clothing or character. The burden of respectability falls exclusively on Rekha, mirroring real-world experiences of millions of women.

Rewriting Cinema’s Moral Dress Code

For generations, Indian films and television have used costume to signal a woman’s virtue. The covered woman is pure; the glamorous one is suspect. Maa Behen dismantles this visual shorthand entirely. Rekha’s blouse tells the audience nothing about her morality — and that is precisely the point.

The film, also featuring Triptii Dimri, Paresh Rawal, and Ravi Kishan, is currently streaming on Netflix. It is an entertaining, if occasionally understated, reminder that a woman’s wardrobe belongs to no one but herself.
