Mumbai news: Rickshaw driver to the rescue; saves burning woman

Mumbai Police detained a 37-year-old man who set her wife on fire in the Chembur area on Wednesday morning.

The charged sprinkled petrol on his partner around Suman Nagar and set her on fire. Nevertheless, a rickshaw driver saved the lady and took her to the hospital. The lady has sustained 10 per cent burn injuries and is out of risk while the accused has been detained.

The rickshaw driver has been identified as Mohammed Ismayil Sheikh. Nehru Nagar cops recorded Sheikh’s statement, and he was praised for his actions.

Police said the indicted, identified as Sanjay Thakur, usually quarrels with his wife for having four daughters and wants a son.

The 33-year-old female, Sarita, wedded Thakur, 37, in 2010 and lived at Rahul Nagar, Chunabhatti. After the wedding, Sarita gave birth to 4 straight girls, which led to anger in the relationship.

Tired of constant disputes, Sarita left home and began living with her sister-in-law at Suman Nagar. Sanjay used to see the place and would constantly abuse Sarita.

On June 14, at about 7.30 am, Sanjay went to her home and asked if she was returning. Sarita denied it, which led to conflicts between the two. Sanjay fled the area, threatening to hurt her. Thinking he had gone, Sarita left her house for work.

When she reached around Annabhau Sathe flyover in Suman Nagar, Mumbai, Sanjay unexpectedly came from behind, sprinkled petrol on Sarita, and burned her. Sarita rushed for help. An auto rickshaw passing from the site (MH-03-BN-8015) stopped and saved Sarita.

“He shouted at onlookers and asked them to put my sister in his auto. He has a passenger in the auto and requested them to deboard,” said Amar Singh, younger sibling of Sarita. “The driver took my sister to hospital. Had he not acted swiftly, we don’t know what would have happened to her,” he continued.

Meanwhile, the cops have registered an offence against Sanjay Thakur and detained him. He was charged under sections 307 (attempt to murder), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.
